Energy Saved During Earth Hour 2024

Posted On Wednesday May 08, 2024

On Friday, March 22, 2024, lights went out throughout the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) in recognition of Earth Hour!

Each year, Earth Hour is celebrated by shutting off lights and electronic devices for 60 minutes to help give an hour to the earth and do something positive for the planet. DCDSB recognized Earth Hour by turning off the lights between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to conserve energy. Across 50 DCDSB buildings, 901 kilowatt hours were saved within the hour!

With all the power the school board saved, DCDSB could:

  • Charge 41,553 smartphones;
  • Save 268 litres of gasoline;
  • Provide electricity to 0.124 homes for a year;
  • Save 694 pounds of coal burned.

Conserving energy doesn’t have to stop with Earth Hour; It can be done any day at any time! It’s as simple as flicking off the lights when leaving a room, unplugging unused gadgets, or switching to energy efficient lightbulbs throughout your home.

Congratulations to all the schools, students and staff who participated in Earth Hour! Your commitment to creating a greener and healthier planet shows that small changes can make a big difference in the future.
