Display Honouring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2-Spirit People at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School

Posted On Wednesday May 08, 2024

On Friday, May 3, St. Mary Catholic Secondary School recognized the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous, Women, Girls and 2-Spirit People. The school’s impactful display included posters with names and images of Indigenous women, girls and 2-spirit individuals that have gone missing or have been murdered.

Grade 11 students researched missing and murdered Indigenous people local to the area after participating in a learning session with Indigenous Education Resource Teacher, Ms. Prebble. The students then spent time researching a specific individual in an attempt to learn about who they were as a person, instead of as a statistic. The students' goals were to honour each individual by highlighting important details on the posters about their lives, and to shed light on how systemic barriers failed to prevent and address this ongoing crisis.

Thank you to Ms. Walton, Curriculum Chair of English and Modern Languages from St. Mary Catholic Secondary School for sharing.
