Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) attended St. Mary on Tuesday, June 13th to complete certification exams for SMAW flat position stick welding and GMAW mig welding. A total of 19 students ranging from grades 9 through 12 were successful in achieving these entrance level certifications.

Students welding experiences ranged from DCDSB summer welding program to Grade 9 Exploring Technologies and Transportation Technology courses in grades 10 through 12. In addition, Kat, Durham College welding instructor, visited St. Mary once per week for the last month to prepare students, filter for aptitude and trained students that showed interest and promise in the trade of welding. Vince Sorbilli, St. Mary Transportation Technology teacher also prepared students through hands-on learning opportunities using the welding bays at St. Mary that were installed earlier this year in partnership with the Canadian Welding Bureau.

St. Mary plans to expand this learning opportunity through SHSM and OYAP to additional trades-minded students in the new year to encourage students to consider post-secondary pathways in the skilled trades.
