Lest We Forget

Posted On Thursday November 02, 2023

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers:

As a nation, throughout the month of November we pause to pay our respects to the over 2.3 million Canadians who have served our country, and continue to serve, in times of war, conflict and peace. Next week on Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day we will honour all those who fought for Canada in the First World War (1914-1918), Second World War (1939-1945), Korean War (1950-1953), and all who have served since then.

Indigenous Veterans Day, which we acknowledge on Wednesday, November 8, is an opportunity to remember the distinct contributions and dedication of Indigenous soldiers, many of whom did not receive the same recognition or treatment as other Canadian Veterans upon returning home. As we continue our journey towards reconciliation, we must remember and honour the impact Indigenous Veterans made, and continue to make, across generations. We invite you to learn more about Indigenous veterans.

Remembrance Day is recognized on November 11. This year, it falls on a Saturday.  Services will take place in our schools on Friday, November 10; however, families are encouraged to take time on Remembrance Day to show gratitude and respect for all Veterans who lost their lives while fighting to protect the freedoms and privileges we enjoy today. Let us never forget the sacrifices they made and the importance of keeping their legacies alive.

Now, more than ever, we invite our Durham Catholic students, staff, and families to join us in praying for peace in our communities and around the world.

Lest we forget.

Yours in Faith,
