On Friday, February 7, our Black Excellence Club, led by Mrs. Soares, Ms. Hoo-Hing and Mr. Pennie, met with a goal to foster an affinity space for students in Grades 3 - 6 with allyship welcomed. Over the past few weeks students have been coming together to learn more about, and share their experiences around race, ethnicity, and identity. Students learned about the ways that racism can be perpetuated in our communities, and the importance of taking a stand against injustices, and hate towards others. Weekly activities are always connected to language, and literacy. Together we read Let’s Talk About Race by Julius Lester and students also spent time creating a tessellation (a flat surface covered with repeating geometric shapes) of identity tiles. Their display celebrates the unique identities, races, and ethnicities of the St. Jude Catholic School community. All students have been invited to create their own identity tile by completing one of the handouts on the display and adding it to the board.
