On November 8 and 9, members of DCDSB’s Indigenous Student Circle (ISC), along with their families, gathered to learn how to bead. A cultural art form of great significance, beading is recognized as a way for Indigenous Peoples to record and translate cultural knowledge, conduct trade and promote wellness.

Local Indigenous artisan Michelle Alexander shared her knowledge and skills, leading the participants in beading orange shirt pins. Of the learning process she said, “don’t try and undo it if you make a mistake. When I first began beading, I was told to leave the mistakes in my work as it keeps you humble.”

This interactive session was the latest in a number of planned get-togethers for the elementary and secondary students on the ISC, to help them engage with their Indigenous identities.
