On November 18, Grade 7 and 8 students at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic School participated in learning with members of the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) Indigenous Education team. The DCDSB Indigenous Education team led students in learning surrounding the Land Acknowledgement, Treaties, and solidifying relationships with the land as an act of reconciliation.
The students first deconstructed the Land Acknowledgement and reviewed the maps on Native-Land.ca to learn more about the first Nations who lived, and continue to live, in Durham Region. After this, students participated in a scavenger hunt in the forested area next to their school. Students found a plant or tree species that they will continue to know and research. To further their learning, and as an act of reciprocity, students will share their learning and introduce their new plant relationship with their peers.
