Our Child and Youth Counsellors have expertise in behaviour management and work with students and school staff to promote social, emotional and mental well-being. The need for a Child and Youth Counsellor is determine through a school team meeting involving:
- parent(s) or guardian(s);
- student (if appropriate);
- school personnel; and the
- Child and Youth Counsellor.
Parent(s) or guardian(s) must be present to discuss the informed consent process with the counsellor.
Why is a student referred?
A student is referred to a Child and Youth Counsellor to assist with skill building in the following areas:
- School transitions
- Bullying prevention and intervention
- Social-emotional learning (e.g. self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, decision making)
- Healthy relationships
- Mental health promotion (Tier 1/whole class)
What does a Child and Youth Counsellor do?
Child and Youth Counsellors provide a range of services, including:
- Supporting educators in selecting and implementing Tier 1 or whole class interventions to support social emotional learning
- Delivering or co-delivering Tier 1 evidence-based programs related to the key areas outlined above
- Individual services aimed at skill building in the key areas outlined above (requires informed consent)
